In academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26, an innovative strategy has been tested during the exercise sessions of a physics course on electromagnetism. A quick multiple-choice test was proposed to second-year mathematical engineering students at the beginning of each exercise session. These activities aimed to foster students’ learning through the retrieval practice of topics covered in lectures. Students’ answers in both years have been analysed to validate the item set and to evaluate the effectiveness of this didactic choice. The results indicate that the items are valid, and a possible effect on exam preparation is currently under investigation.

Abstract

In academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26, an innovative strategy has been tested during the exercise sessions of a physics course on electromagnetism. A quick multiple-choice test was proposed to second-year mathematical engineering students at the beginning of each exercise session. These activities aimed to foster students’ learning through the retrieval practice of topics covered in lectures. Students’ answers in both years have been analysed to validate the item set and to evaluate the effectiveness of this didactic choice. The results indicate that the items are valid, and a possible effect on exam preparation is currently under investigation.
