Traditional architectures of machine tools and production systems are characterized by heavy, long-delivery-time, high-energy-consuming and over-sized solutions whose responsiveness to frequent production changes is extremely expensive and time consuming. This work outlines the concept of dematerialization across machine tool and system lifecycles by enabling the development of ultra-light and modular machine tools as well as customized system solutions conceived to adapt product evolution by accomplishing very performing environmental and productivity targets. They result of a holistic process dealing with new business total-life cycle services, design of dematerialized and modular machine tools, process planning and (re)configuration of production system solutions.

Abstract
