Wheel-set derailment due to flange climb is one of the more dangerous phenomena affecting the ride safety of railway vehicles and needs to be properly studied in order to prevent it both at the stage of vehicle design and during vehicle operation. In fact, an exact understanding of flange climb mechanism can be exploited at the design stage to enhance ride safety by the appropriate choice of some key design parameters (shape of the wheel rim, bogie wheelbase, stiffness of the primary suspensions), and at the same time can be used to define appropriate standards for maintenance of the rolling stock and of the line, and also to design suitable derailment detectors that may reveal the incipient derailment and warn the train driver before the ride safety limit is exceeded.
