More than 50% of the closed theatres in Italy are historic buildings with an architectural and documentary significance, present in big cities but mainly in the provinces. These monuments represent, beyond their intrinsic artistic value, part of the large Italian cultural heritage, a network of spaces where the urban cultural life and citizenship political and social identity were developed. This paper investigates the purposes and methodologies of the reuse and requalification projects of these buildings, starting from the direct experience of the R. Marenco Theatre functional upgrading project in Novi L. (AL) – originally designed by G. Becchi (1836-39) with the consultancy of Luigi Canonica. The case study analysis, involving the difficult relationship between conservation issues and the compliance to safety, comfort and fruition regulations as well as posing questions concerning the economical sustainability of the renewed structure, suggests important more general considerations and reflections on the role of this heritage in the contemporary city and on the rationale of their requalification projects.
