The integration of Mass Customization and Sustainable Development paradigms can lead to significantly benefits to companies. To harness their potentialities a suitable stable solution space, describing the product, the production system and the supply network, has to be defined. New structured design approaches are required for handling Sustainability and Mass Customization requirements while considering the three aspects of a stable solution space: products, production system and supply network. This work, on the basis of a holistic solution space design framework, describes various tools and explains how they allow to improve the traditional design process. The identified design shifts are mapped towards the proposed tools. Some of the tools are meant to support the design activities (assessment tool, design tools and tools collecting customers’ requirements), others are called for by the output of the design activities (configurator, production technologies and assessment tool). The modifications (competences, network configuration, relationships with supply chain partners and managerial policies) necessary for effectively using the tools are identified and potential solutions are proposed. Summarising, the proposed tools and methodologies support the decision makers in the definition and deployment of suitable Sustainable Mass Customized (SMC) business model, through the definition of an adequate stable solution space since the beginning of the design process.
