The Adriatic-Danube connection (which was already a hypothesis during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) would require a tunnel 120 km long to cross the Carso-Alpi Giulie mountain system, which would be navigable only after the ships were lifted vertically 8on the side of Trieste) in mechanical elevators. It would continue as an open air waterway in the territory of Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary, where difference in altitude would be serviced by navigation locks. Scholars have calculated the cost of construction and management, with detailed comparisons agiainst intineraries and modes used today.
