The paper investigates the possibilities of building within the built environment through three steps: discussion of the notion of monument, in regard to concepts of context and place; the idea of project as a modification tool; possible strategies for context modifications, within a wider perspective where context and monument are not fixed values but they can change according to the cultural judgement that accompanies the design.
