The influence of molecular weight and/or stereoregularity on the polymorphic behavior of P3BT has been analyzed and the conditions to obtain the different polymorphs have been investigated. Form II is easier obtained crystallizating low molecular weight samples by casting from CHCl3, but similar diffraction profiles characterize also high molecular weight sample treated by CS2 vapor. The presence of form II in P3BT films could be important in determining electrical properties of materials, because a perpendicular alignment of the chain axis with respect to the film plane has been proposed for films in Form II.7 This preferential orientation could allow a more efficient intrachain charge transfer in direction perpendicular to film plane. A more complete description of the crystalline structure of Form II of P3BT is needed to confirm the real orientation of the chains respect to film plane. The diffraction data of Fig. 4 will be used to determine the crystalline structure of form II of P3BT (this study is in progress)
