Amplitude-to-phase noise conversion due to varactor non-linearity can limit close-in phase noise performance of LC-tuned oscillators. The series back-to-back varactor configuration is demonstrated to attenuate greatly this up-conversion mechanism without impairing the oscillator tuning range. An oscillator in 3-V 0.35μm CMOS adopting the back-to-back configuration in stead of the conventional topology shows a reduction of 15dB in the close-in phase noise, while maintaining a 32% wide tuning range.

Abstract
Amplitude-to-phase noise conversion due to varactor non-linearity can limit close-in phase noise performance of LC-tuned oscillators. The series back-to-back varactor configuration is demonstrated to attenuate greatly this up-conversion mechanism without impairing the oscillator tuning range. An oscillator in 3-V 0.35μm CMOS adopting the back-to-back configuration in stead of the conventional topology shows a reduction of 15dB in the close-in phase noise, while maintaining a 32% wide tuning range.File in questo prodotto:
