The dynamic response of suspended cables has been explored in literature using several analytical and numerical techniques. In spite of the large literature on the subject, direct comparisons of the results are however scarce. The present study compares effectiveness and limitations of analytical Galerkin models and finite element models in describing the most important nonlinear phenomena of the suspended cables dynamics for in-plane and out-of-plane harmonic loading. First, the planar oscillations are analysed in order to investigate the contribution of higher modes; thereafter, the three-dimensional motion is considered. The comparison is in terms of the stable branches of frequency response curves and the most significant bifurcation phenomena. The results allow for drawing a few conclusions on the effectiveness of both models and a more refined picture of the cable behaviour.
