Abstract

The Milan’s new Urban Park that is called Library with Trees, is an innovative park that designed through an architectural competition by the landscape Architect Petra Blaisse of the Duch company Inside -Oitside in 2003 and has been implemented in in 2015 while is managed by a Coima development company. The design represents a collection of different tree species (library) using modern forms and geometries (circled and squares). The park is occupying total area of 95000 square metres and is the 3rd largest park in Milan and the first park that is managed by a private entity (Foundation). It contains 500 different trees in the shape of 22 circular forests, and 135,000 plants, including over 100 different species of shrubs, hedges, creepers, and climbing plants, aquatic and ornamental plants, aromatic plants, buds, and flowers (COIMA, 2018). The park is hosting different activities over the year (e.g. Design week, Arc week), educational and training activities and include all different ages in the different sectors of the park. Through this paper is shown how the park is changing through the different seasons and throughout the days where hundreds of visitors stop to take pictures with the Vertical Forest (Bosco Verticale) or with the flowered meadows. The park as a strategic component linking the green area to the surrounding retail, fashion, and cultural structure, to the offices and residential spaces. The mixed-use spatial structure therefore facilitates channeling activity and communication to the park, and the park’s attraction helps to change the area of Porta Nuova
