The scientific community is actively engaged in investigating and developing innovative technological solutions capable of addressing climate change, mitigating its effects, and contributing to the development of renewable and sustainable energy sources. One of the major contributors to global warming is carbon dioxide emissions associated with heating and cooling systems. Recognising that the upgrading of buildings and infrastructure to address the ageing and deterioration of structural components has become an ongoing process, particularly in Italy and other European countries, a national research project has sought to exploit this process as an opportunity for technological innovation. Indeed, energy geostructures could play a significant role in decarbonising the construction sector, particularly when integrated with other energy retrofitting strategies. This paper therefore focuses on the potential for interventions involving existing geostructures, with the aim of describing the main technologies available for their energy-related adaptation. To address the knowledge gaps that currently hinder their widespread practical application in Italy, the paper also examines selected experimental test sites and presents preliminary findings concerning the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour and energy performance of these systems.

Abstract
To address the knowledge gaps that currently hinder their widespread practical application in Italy, the paper also examines selected experimental test sites and presents preliminary findings concerning the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour and energy performance of these systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
