Rising temperatures significantly increase the health risks associated with heat stress in urban areas. This study aims to identify the main demographic, climatic, health-related, social, urban, and institutional factors that shape the spatial distribution of urban communities’ vulnerability to heatwaves. The study first identifies the key dimensions and most relevant indicators of heat stress affecting urban resilience and public health. It then develops a multidimensional and multidisciplinary framework for assessing urban resilience to extreme heat and informing climate-resilient urban planning policies and design strategies. The relevance of an approach grounded in cross-disciplinary knowledge is subsequently discussed. The study highlights the need to introduce holistic strategies encompassing green and blue infrastructure, climate adaptation policies, and the engagement of local stakeholders. It also emphasises the importance of considering the interconnections between different dimensions of governance, particularly institutional and community-level governance, in strengthening urban resilience to extreme heat. On the one hand, public authorities play a crucial role in managing extreme weather events through emergency services, support for healthcare professionals, and public awareness programmes. On the other hand, the study underscores the importance of social ties and spontaneous forms of solidarity emerging at the neighbourhood level, which can make a significant contribution to strengthening community resilience in the face of extreme heat.

Abstract
On the other hand, the study underscores the importance of social ties and spontaneous forms of solidarity emerging at the neighbourhood level, which can make a significant contribution to strengthening community resilience in the face of extreme heat.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
