Dredging and excavation operations in clayey soils generate large volumes of material that are often considered unsuitable for reuse and therefore destined for disposal, resulting in resource wastage and uncontrolled land consumption. The classification of these materials as “unsuitable” largely stems from a lack of technical knowledge concerning their potential reuse, particularly with regard to understanding and modelling the hydro-mechanical processes that influence their properties and geotechnical response when employed as construction materials. This contribution proposes a modelling strategy for the hydro-mechanical behaviour of these materials based on the distinction between two levels of porosity: the porosity of the material constituting the individual blocks and the porosity associated with the voids between them. Particular attention is devoted to the role of mass transfer between inter-block and intra-block voids, for which a formulation based on Cryer’s theory (1963) is proposed. Implemented within a coupled finite-element formulation, the model makes it possible to evaluate the duration of the consolidation process as a function of the characteristic size of the blocks.

Abstract
Implemented within a coupled finite-element formulation, the model makes it possible to evaluate the duration of the consolidation process as a function of the characteristic size of the blocks.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
