The offshore industry plays a crucial role in energy supply through the exploitation of subsea resources and the development of complex fluid-transport infrastructure. In this context, the installation and management of subsea pipelines pose significant engineering challenges, including sand sedimentation during trench installation. This process may induce buoyancy effects capable of influencing pipeline stability and position. This paper describes a numerical model developed to simulate sedimentation, consolidation, and the transition between these two processes by means of a simplified interaction coefficient. The model is then applied to the engineering problem of pipeline interaction with backfill sand during trench installation. Within this framework, pipeline motion is evaluated through numerical integration of the dynamic equilibrium equation along the vertical direction only, with the pipe cross-section represented as a point mass subjected to time-dependent forces. The model was validated against experimental data, showing satisfactory agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results.

Abstract
The model was validated against experimental data, showing satisfactory agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
