Abstract

The construction site for conserving architectural heritage, particularly in Europe, has consolidated the methods and tools of knowledge and intervention over the years. Despite this, the outcomes cannot always be defined as “conservative.” The collaboration, not always linear and simple, between the disciplines involved in cultural heritage has made it possible to intertwine the necessary knowledge to develop effective diagnoses and treatments. Through the chronicle of a troubled construction site on an urban gate of Multan city in Pakistan, the contribution aims to lead some reflections on how a relationship consolidated in some contexts is still in its infancy, if non-existent, in emerging countries. In Pakistan, in the 1920s, as part of British India, restoration was regulated by the “modern” Conservation Manual of the Englishman John Marshall. After some time, restoration is still the replacement of parts, demonstrating a close link between theoretical thought and interdisciplinary relationships for developing innovative conservation techniques.
