A sustainable transition requires harnessing the power of solar energy into all urban contexts including heritage and historical neighbourhoods. The integration of solar technology systems in the heritage neighbourhoods presents challenges and barriers that should be properly and timely addressed by maintaining the heritage and historical value. The optimal preservation of such areas in the case of Photovoltaic (PV) systems implementation should be analysed in terms of compatibility, integration, and reversibility to ensure the preservation of historical value, harmonious integration with architectural aesthetics, and the ability to maintain or restore the original buildings’ performance in the future. This study aims to explore the challenges and the barriers associated with the integration of solar technology systems into historical buildings and heritage neighbourhoods in Norway where the solar potential is far to be fully exploited. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted to identify the critical factors and conservation criteria relevant to define a successful implementation of strategies and solutions to boost the solar integration in the heritage and historical neighbourhoods. In this study technical challenges and barriers of the use of solar energy in heritage urban areas are identified and discussed with a specific emphasis on compatibility, integration, and reversibility. By examining these key aspects, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the complexities of the deployment of PV systems in heritage neighbourhoods and contribute to the development of innovative approaches. Finally, a reflection of the results in a Norwegian case study of a historical neighbourhood is assessed to evaluate and develop strategies for overcoming the identified challenges and barriers. The findings have implications for decision-makers, heritage preservation professionals, and urban planners, by offering insights into potential solutions and strategies to integrate solar technology systems in heritage neighbourhoods.
