The experience of the openair schools reminds us that the external space belonging to the school- if designed together with the building- becomes an integral part of the didactic activity, as highlighted in the first two case studies reported, the Casa del Sole and the Rinnovata Pizzigoni both in Milan. For too many years the awareness of the external-school- space resource has been lost. Fortunately, more and more school communities are involved in the realization of equipped spaces in the schoolyards, convinced that teaching in contact with nature offers opportunities to stimulate all students who learn respect for nature since the childhood. The examples given by the Marymount school in Rome and Dante Alighieri in Milan make us think about how to enhance the available outdoor space by identifying new functions and activities on surfaces and equipment.
