This short essay is the foreword of a book that presents an elaboration of selected chapters from Claudia Zanda, author of the doctoral thesis: The architecture of motorway infrastructures between maintenance and preservation. The A22 and the territory of Mantova, supervised by professors Andrea Gritti (Politecnico di Milano) and Eric Alonzo (École d’architecture de la ville & des territoires à Marne-la-Vallée). The thesis was successfully defended on December the 3rd, 2018, at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, Politecnico di Milano, in a period where was relevant the topic of motorways' preservation and maintenance, considering the effects of Moandi Bridge's collapse.
