COMMUNICATING THROUGH ARCHITECTURE: DESIGN STRATEGIES AND TOOLS TO ENHANCE CONNECTIONS IN HISTORICAL ENVIRONMENTS

The presentation focuses on the necessity to improve the connection between the river banks and the city centre, and in particular it questions the capability of architecture to contribute to activate or create new physical, perceptual and symbolic relationships between these realms, with the aim to enhance the understanding, the historical narration and the life of these areas. The proposal builds on the acknowledgment of the possibility to use architectural means and forms to convey meanings and messages, to orient the perception and behaviour of the users, to display the tangible and intangible heritage values embedded in a historical site, and to bring to light the connections that may bind together different places (according to a cultural or functional framework). Thus, the presentation will propose a taxonomic analysis of the design strategies and tools that have the potential to enhance the communication in complex spatial systems. The contribution will draw on a set of paradigmatic case studies referred to the renovation of public spaces in historical cities which approached similar conditions than those that affect the project site in Krakow. Design solutions based on the reiterated use of materials and forms, the emphasis on geometric references, the exploitation of physical or virtual installations, the cooperation between art and architecture, etc. will be discussed to highlight the possible answers to the design problems at the core of the Biennale programme. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Prezentacja skupia się na konieczności poprawy połączenia pomiędzy brzegami rzeki a centrum miasta, a w szczególności zadaje pytanie o zdolność architektury do aktywacji lub stworzenia nowych fizycznych, percepcyjnych i symbolicznych związków między tymi domenami, celem lepszego zrozumienia, narracji historycznej i życia tych terenów. Propozycja jest zbudowana w oparciu o uznanie możliwości użycia architektonicznych środków i form dla przekazu znaczeń i przesłań, dla zorientowania percepcji i zachowania użytkowników, dla ukazania wartości materialnych i niematerialnych tkwiących w miejscu historycznym, i dla wydobycia na światło dzienne połączeń, które mogą wiązać różne miejsca (zgodnie z ramami kulturowymi lub funkcjonalnymi). Zatem, prezentacja zaproponuje taksonomiczną analizę strategii projektowych i narzędzi posiadających potencjał ulepszenia komunikacji w złożonych systemach przestrzennych. Praca czerpać będzie z zestawu paradygmatycznych studiów przypadków, odnoszących się do renowacji przestrzeni publicznych w podobnych warunkach, jak warunki wpływające na projekt w Krakowie. Rozwiązania projektowe oparte na powtarzalnym użyciu materiałów i form, z naciskiem na odniesienia geometryczne, wykorzystanie instalacji fizycznych i wirtualnych, kooperację sztuki i architektury etc. zostaną przedyskutowane dla wskazania możliwych odpowiedzi na problemy projektowe postawione w programie Biennale.
