Active vibration control of flexible systems is still an open issue. Among the different techniques developed during the last decades resonant controllers are becoming more and more attractive. They concentrate the feedback action in a particular frequency range, optimizing the control effort and minimizing the spillover effect on nonmodeled dynamics. In particular, negative derivative feedback (NDF), feeding back the velocity through a modal compensator, reduces spillover at frequencies both lower and higher than the desired range of interest. Starting from this approach, the possibility to create a smart structure able to adapt the control parameters to the vibration characteristics represents a very promising solution. A NDF adaptive control logic has been designed and analyzed, both numerically and experimentally, on a carbon fiber plate test rig.
