Abstract

City museums in recent years are a kind of museum that is particularly active and interesting in relation to many of the emerging themes in the museum area in Europe, including the issue of the relationship between cultural goods and new technologies. The interest that has focused over recent years on city museums is largely due to the profound wave of social, cultural, economic and geopolitical changes that are investing in contemporary cities, especially in relation to the phenomena of globalization, fluid mobility and Time-space compression of the “network society”, the implications for migration flows that are affecting the Western countries of the globe and the economic, political and social process of creating and consolidating the European community. What is theorized today is a model of a constantly updated city museum, in close relation with the city’s reality in its complexity, taking part in the most crucial and contemporary cultural issues affecting the various urban communities with their specificities and their different ways of live the city. From a city’s history museum, whose purpose was to collect, preserve and celebrate civic history, it goes hand in hand with a museum’s idea of the city which, alongside its conservative and exhibition functions, plays an important and fundamental educational, political and social role.
