This chapter will discuss the application of corrugated panels, made of composite laminates, for the development of anisotropic skin systems capable of large deformation in selected morphing directions. A set of corrugated shapes is selected and their response is evaluated by means of different analytical approaches. Sensitivity studies are carried out for anisotropy of stiffness and compliance properties for morphing performances involving axial extension and bending of the skin. Moreover, structural contributions for responses not involved in morphing functionalities are investigated and compared; available results regarding strength properties and deformation limits are discussed. The potential of corrugated composite laminates for the development of structurally efficient and performant morphing skin system is highlighted, and the different types of corrugated shapes are compared considering both functional and structural requirements. The problems relevant to the manufacturing of corrugated skins are considered and technological processes are described. Finally, critical issues regarding the aerodynamic efficiency of corrugated skins are outlined and solutions are presented to develop a skin system based on corrugated laminates that prevent detrimental effects on aerodynamic performance due to corrugations.

Abstract
Finally, critical issues regarding the aerodynamic efficiency of corrugated skins are outlined and solutions are presented to develop a skin system based on corrugated laminates that prevent detrimental effects on aerodynamic performance due to corrugations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
