In this paper we propose a strategy for cycling cadence estimation from bicycle wheel speed, which does not require any physical cadence sensor. Specifically, the pedaling rate is obtained from the estimation of the employed gear ratio through a proper Kalman filtering of the processed wheel speed signal. Abstract

The analysis is supported by experimental tests carried out with an instrumented bicycle.
