The paper deals with the themes of drawing in the heuristic design phase and with the relationship between drawing tools (analog and digital) and changes of cognitive paradigm in design thinking process. With reference both to the theories of Psychology of Vision and Cognitive Neuropsychology, the paper highlights that when the freehand sketching is replaced by digital modeling even in the concept design phase, radical changes occur not only from the figurative point of view, but also in terms of cognitive and logical processes. New 3D sketching software, still under development, could revitalize the role of freehand drawing in the design process, from concept to engineering.
