A project is presented, aimed to enhance the less known architectural heritage that, though not recognized as "official cultural heritage", plays a fundamental role for the identity of a territory and its population. The study is ongoing in the area of Sacro Monte di Varese (Italy), acknowledged as UNESCO heritage, and focuses on the identification and cataloguing of a number of villas which were built during the late 19th and early 20th century, many of which present the typical local Art Nouveau characters. Touristic itineraries were built in the surrounding of the mapped properties, identified thanks to the combination of scientific (archival and bibliographic research, etc ...) and unconventional (citizens participation) contribution, and were aimed at facilitating the discovery of small valuable buildings that are often overshadowed by more well-known heritage. To foster the active participation of the community through easily accessible devices, further steps of the research will include the development of tools for supporting decisions like customizable Web Apps that allow each user to choose the sequence of visit places that best suits his/her needs.
