Abstract
In thispaper,thedynamicresponseofaTimoshenkobeamwithdistributedinternalviscousdamping (DIVD) isanalyzedwiththeaimtoascertaintheirrelativeeffectsonthewholerangeofbeam slenderness. Withrespecttosomepreviousandquiterecentworks,somefurtherandfundamental generalizationsarethereforeintroduced.First,thedecouplingofshearandbendingdampingmechan- isms, withorwithoutthepresenceoftheexternalclassicalviscouscontribution.Thissplittingallowsthe outlining oftherelevantinfluences onthedynamicresponseassociatedtoanysingulardamping mechanism andtheevaluationofthemodalcriticaldamping.Asasecondcontemporarystep,anexplicit dependency issetupontheshearslendernessofthebeammodel,allowingtostudythedependenceof each singledampingmechanismupontherelevantkinematicmodel,spanningfromtrulyBernoulli's behaviortomainlyShearcontrolledresponses.Accordingtotheselecteddampingmodel,thedynamic behaviorautomaticallyselectsthecharacteristicsofkinematicalresponse(relativelevelsofshearand bending contributions)dependingoftheminimizationofthetotalinternalenergy(i.e.elasticenergyand dissipation).
