This paper presents the design and the construction of the rigid foundation slab of the Politecnico di Milano Polo Territoriale di Lecco structural Laboratory. The slab is made of fibre reinforced concrete and reinforced with traditional steel bars. The lab has been design to test structural elements with maximum span up to 6 m subjected to both horizontal and vertical loads. The foundation slab is characterized by a thickness of 1.6m and by an in-plan size of 115 m2. Several anchoring points are available to connect to the slab different loading devices in order to apply load up to 1000 kN. The design procedure and the advantages of the use of FRC are discussed with reference to both the sectional behaviour of the slab and its effectiveness on the failure mechanism when tensile force is applied to the anchoring system. An experimental investigation has been performed to characterize the material used according to Model Code 2010.
