The research that we present has been funded by means of a consultancy agreement between the Municipality of Milan and the Research Group “Urbanism and retail management” of the Department of Architecture and Planning of the Milan Polytechnic. The research activity aimed at setting up an innovative tool to provide and update information and data concerning the urban retail system through the approach of the geographical and spatial analysis. On the other hand, retail policy guidances were supposed to be provided, joined up with the planning policy guidances provided by the master plan which is under construction in Milan. GIS techniques matched with different procedures of spatial analysis experienced in other research fields, have allowed to build up a tool which is quite new for the representation of urban retail and mixed activities. The main goal of the setting up of this tool is to represent commercial aggregations or districts, characterized by different mix and density of activities. Another specific goal has been to support the City offices in the identification of five “commercial urban districts” according to a recent Act of the Lombardy Region.
