The descriptive model of architecture normally deals with aspects that connect an architecture to its primary formal source, i.e. geometry. So, when it comes to building semantic models, a widely used strategy is to lay on a standard 3D model some thematic layers which show something about the topics you are interested in, to achieve the establishment of a stable model of a well known type and which is universally interpretable, both in terms of those principles that make it a model and from the point of view of content. We have decided to investigate around the chance of application of a semantic theory which derives directly from linguistics. Namely the “theory of prototypes” by Rosh, Kay and Berlin, which is here used to set the basis for a model of an architectural topic. We know that a semantic model must necessarily refer to internal qualities to the architecture, which represent its goal and of which it is a mimesis, but at the same time may also contain general qualities and values, metonymically related to the subject but not parts of it. In this contribution we want to account for the use of a graded semantic networks for the building of descriptive models of architecture and show their application upon the case of the Olivetti industrial district in Ivrea.
