In this essay, a procedure is presented for the use of advanced energy simulation tools aimed to the evaluations of design options for the exploitation of solar energy systems in built environments. A specific implementation of the procedure in a software application named OPTS, by the author, is addressed, aimed to automate and direct the use of the ESP-r energy simulation suite. Then parallel coordinates plots are identified and employed as most suitable representation method for the described kind of multi-variate, multi-criteria analysis. Lastly, the use of the presented set of tools and methods is exemplified through two cases of passive solar gain systems in simple abstract urban contexts.
