Abstract

The paperdiscusseswhetherbi-orientedPVC,obtainedbymodifyingthestructuresofpolymerschains to enhancethemechanicalpropertiesofunplasticizedPVC,couldsuccessfullyreplacemetallicmaterials in industrialapplicationswhereradioactive fluids areprocessedandanintense field ofionizingradiation is present.Testshavebeencarriedoutinordertostudythebehaviorofacommercialbi-orientedPVC when exposedtoionizingradiations.Anumericalsimulationallowscomparingtheeffectsofradiation expectedonthepipeinnuclearindustryapplicationswiththoseresultingfromtheirradiationtests. Contamination anddecontaminationtestsofbi-orientedPVCincontactwitharadioactivesolutionhave been performedtoo.Resultsshowthatthebi-orientedPVCcanwithstandhigh β and γ radiation doses (up to100kGy)withoutshowingsignificant degradationinmechanicalproperties;bi-orientationof polymers chainsinthebulkofmaterialisnotaffectedeventomuchhigherdoses(250kGy);the decontamination ofthematerialissatisfactory.Theresultssuggestthattestedcommercialbi-oriented PVC couldbeconsideredinnuclearindustryapplications.
