The amount of archaeological sites scattered throughout Europe, so not suitably protected from natural and human impacts, requires much thought. The objective of this paper is to investigate the role of contemporary museography in the conservation of archaeological sites and to demonstrate how it can be an effective tool in protecting against the risks to which cultural heritage is subjected to. Comparative analysis of recent projects on Italian and European archaeological sites suggests that strategies for the conservation and mitigation of impacts vary greatly. Despite the different approaches, all these projects have the same objectives: to mitigate any natural and human hazards that the remains may be exposed to, by controlling their protection and accessibility, and to actively transform it using tools for improving legibility and comprehension of the archaeological heritage.
