1911: the journey to Rome of the students of Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano for the fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of Italy Ornella Selvafolta Following the tradition of educational trip as a specific feature of engineers and architects training at the Politecnico di Milano, the graduate students of the Architecture School traveled to Rome in 1911. The occasion was to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of country and the advent of the Italian Kingdom. Accompanied by their teachers, the students visited the different national and international Exhibitions celebrating the event, the main historical monuments of the city and the surrounding areas, with particular attention to the archaeological sites. While retracing their routes, the essay reflects on different topics pertaining polytechnic education and architectural culture and highlights significant aspects of the 1911 celebrations as a mirror of national issues in a particularly significant moment of Italian history.
