The building that houses Mediobanca today is the product of a series of transformations pertaining to the evolution of the city of Milan itself. The essay deals with a multifaceted history considering different sources (most of them unpublished till now): written documents and cartographic records, official deeds and private papers, drawings and photographs that interweave architecture and urban planning with historical events, family stories and customs related to its use. A particular attention is given to the Gnecchi Ruscone residence, set up in the second half of the XIXth century, before Mediobanca moved into the building, and to the many architectural and decorative features that can still be found in the palace.
