A brief introduction to the finite element method in nonlinear mechanics is presented. The discussion focuses on purely mechanical problems excluding thermal processes. In view of finite element discretization, nonlinear theories of mechanics can be formulated in different ways, characterized by various advantages and difficulties. All such ways are here introduced and discussed.
