The focus of the study is the assessment of the performances of a crosslinked Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE), depending on the thermal stabilization process. The crosslinked UHMWPE was submitted alternatively to either annealing or remelting process, and the final properties were measured and compared. Comparison was extended to a virgin (not crosslinked) medical grade UHMWPE resin to quantify the benefits introduced by the crosslinking process as concern the increased wear endurance. The aim of the test is the allowance to replace standard medical grade UHMWPE by crosslinked UHMWPE in the manufacturing of acetabular cups of hip prostheses, improving the wear endurance and the long term stability of the component and without a significant decrease in other end-user mechanical properties.

Abstract
The focus of the study is the assessment of the performances of a crosslinked Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE), depending on the thermal stabilization process. The crosslinked UHMWPE was submitted alternatively to either annealing or remelting process, and the final properties were measured and compared. Comparison was extended to a virgin (not crosslinked) medical grade UHMWPE resin to quantify the benefits introduced by the crosslinking process as concern the increased wear endurance. The aim of the test is the allowance to replace standard medical grade UHMWPE by crosslinked UHMWPE in the manufacturing of acetabular cups of hip prostheses, improving the wear endurance and the long term stability of the component and without a significant decrease in other end-user mechanical properties.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
