I PROBLEMI LEGATI ALLA QUANTIFICAZIONE DELL’ESPOSIZIONE NEI CASI DI MALATTIE ASBESTO CORRELATE

For the causal relationship between exposure to asbestos and certain diseases that have arisen in patients exposed, the crucial problem is the identification of the origin and extent of exposure. Exposure is often described as the mere presence of asbestos in the workplace, or with nominal ratings (high, medium, low, etc.). This contrasts with the definition given by WHO and other international organizations. Exposure and Dose are quantitative concepts, which require the knowledge of the air pollutant concentration and exposure time. Since the use of asbestos was very widespread, for the reconstruction of the past exposure we must take account of the occupational and non-occupational exposures. In the absence of measures, the exposure can be estimated using literature data and appropriate models. The use of personal protective equipment (masks), must be carefully assessed in relation to their actual degree of protection
