The seven lives of “Space & Society” Le sette vite di “Spazio e Società”

In the issue that wrapped up the historic series of the periodical, titled Space & Society. A Longitudinal Section through the Review (published by Maggioli and edited by Francesco Samassa), Sara Basso concluded an interesting thematic survey of the magazine by re- reading some of the editorials in a wide-ranging essay titled “The Editorials of Giancarlo De Carlo”. In this essay, which opened with some brief observations of a general character about the "independent and personal" nature of the editorials, Basso made a first attempt at a comparative reflection by combining observations on the form and content of the magazine with some brief comments that recreated the biographical, intellectual and professional profile of its editor. The result was a significant cross section through the developing themes, interests and perspectives of the review as seen from De Carlo's editorials. This exposition was backed up by a preliminary operation of "periodization", with the survey being organized around the review's structure and the way it was run, on the one hand, and the identification of the prevalent themes in the various cycles of its life on the other. The four phases the essay identified had greatly different time-spans during the more than twenty-year duration of the magazine's life. The first three phases, which saw the magazine's launch and the definition of its structure and contents, covered the first half of this period (from its birth in 1978 as an independent periodical down to the end of the eighties), with a careful reconstruction of the labour and effort that went into building up the editorial project. The last period comprised the issues published over the last 12 years, which reflect a substantial stability in the review's philosophy and its editorial structure. The closure of the historic series of "Space & Society" has now prompted us to carry out a different and complementary task, by presenting users of Planum with an anthology of passages taken from the editorials in which Giancarlo De Carlo tells the story of "Space & Society". Nel fascicolo che chiude la serie storica della Rivista, intitolato Spazio e Società. Una sezione longitudinale sulla rivista, pubblicato dall’Editore Maggioli e curato da Francesco Samassa, Sara Basso conclude una interessante rassegna tematica sulla Rivista rileggendo alcuni degli editoriali in un ampio saggio dal titolo “Gli editoriali di Giancarlo De Carlo”. In questo lavoro, che si apre con alcune rapide considerazioni di carattere generale sulla natura “autonoma e personale” degli editoriali, l’autrice compie un primo tentativo di riflessione comparativa facendo interagire considerazioni relative alla forma ed al contenuto della Rivista insieme ad alcuni brevi accenni che ricostruiscono un profilo biografico, intellettuale e professionale del suo direttore. Il risultato è uno spaccato significativo che presenta l’evoluzione di temi, interessi e prospettive della Rivista attraverso gli editoriali di De Carlo. L’esposizione è sostenuta da una preliminare operazione di “periodizzazione” rispetto alla quale si organizza la ricognizione attorno alla struttura della Rivista e alla sua gestione, da un lato, ed alla individuazione dei temi prevalenti nei vari cicli di vita, dall’altro. Le quattro fasi individuate sono significativamente distribuite in maniera non omogenea lungo l’arco dell’esistenza più che ventennale di “Spazio e Società”: mentre le prime tre di avvio e definizione della struttura e dei contenuti ne coprono la prima metà (dalla nascita nel 1978 come testata autonoma sino alla fine degli anni Ottanta) restituendo con cura il lavorìo e la fatica necessari alla costruzione del progetto editoriale, l’ultima comprende i numeri degli ultimi 12 anni redatti in un clima di sostanziale stabilità della linea di riflessione e della struttura editoriale. La chiusura della serie storica di “Spazio e Società” ci suggerisce oggi di svolgere un compito diverso e complementare, proponendo all’utente di Planum una selezione antologica di alcuni brani tratti dagli editoriali in cui Giancarlo De Carlo racconta “Spazio e Società”.
