In the transition from the design phase to the construction of high quality building products it appears decisive the role of the connotations of environmental sustainability, as conceived in an interdisciplinary way and, therefore, supported by design approaches based on the collaborative design. This paper describes the point of view of ISTeA with respect to such matters and how it has been structured in last years through many and diversified research activities, also at international level. In particular, in order to achieve the targets set out in the vision, the contribution of some specific areas is underlined: nearly zero energy buildings, design for disassembling, building automation, LCA sustainability evaluations, collaborative design. After having specified the areas of research and their contextualization at the international level, and especially the European one, the paper indicates the possible focus for initiatives and projects ISTeA oriented to the high quality building production, as supported by collaborative design that is hoped will change in collaborative design and construction.
