One issue which is the subject of fierce debate in architecture today is the degree to which buildings should be recognisable: in the modern era, estimates of the importance of a clearly stated functional identity vary widely. The Church is also addressing the subject with regard to new religious buildings, and the Italian Episcopal Conference is engaged in an ongoing dialogue with all the schools of thought concerned.
