Computer graphics pioneers in the early stages of this fascinating field of research had as a reference point a Special Interest Group created in the framework of the American Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The name of this group was and still is Siggraph. Siggraph meeting events have become the excellence both in conference, tutorial and exhibit all over the world. In the mid of the eighties, thanks to the joint efforts of French INA (Institute National de l’Audiovisuel) and the principality of Monte Carlo an European “twin” was born: IMAGINA. IMAGINA have become the “alias” of software applications, innovative algorithms, shading and illumination models, early special effects. We must not forget that before the eighties and till the early nineties major part of computer graphics and derivates such as VR was a pure research field with limited applications in the field of defence or electronic and mechanical engineering. High costs of equipments and unavailability of low prices on the shelf solutions kept this sector out of the market. Computer aided design was one of the first branch of CG to reach the market both in the industrial sector and later on in the field of architecture and urban planning.

Abstract

Computer graphics pioneers in the early stages of this fascinating field of research had as a reference point a Special Interest Group created in the framework of the American Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The name of this group was and still is Siggraph. Siggraph meeting events have become the excellence both in conference, tutorial and exhibit all over the world. In the mid of the eighties, thanks to the joint efforts of French INA (Institute National de l’Audiovisuel) and the principality of Monte Carlo an European “twin” was born: IMAGINA. IMAGINA have become in a short the European showcase of computer graphics advances.
