The San Michele bridge over the Adda river at Paderno, opened in 1889, is one of the most important monuments of XIX century iron architecture. Notwithstanding the lack of maintenance and the poor state of preservation, the historic infrastructure is still used as a combined road and rail bridge. A series of ambient vibration tests, performed in 2009, suggested the opportunity of installing a permanent dynamic monitoring system on the bridge with Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) purposes. After a summary of the conclusions inferred from the early tests (2009), the paper focuses on the ongoing SHM program based on continuous dynamic monitoring.. The design and installation of the monitoring system (that is now active since November 2011) is described and typical results, addressing the effects of excitation amplitude and temperature on the natural frequencies of the bridge, are presented and discussed.
