The paper presents the results obtained from the application of output-only modal identification to ambient response data collected in two dynamic tests of a cable-stayed bridge. During the second test, performed on July 18-19, 2007 remarkable increase of the natural frequencies was observed in the afternoon of both days of testing: The reversibility of those frequency variations between morning and afternoon suggested a possible dependence on the temperature, that also exhibited significant increase in the afternoon of the two days selected for testing. FE simulations provided the evidence that the observed frequency shifts depended on the anomalous closure (induced by the increase of temperature) of the expansion joint placed on one side of the deck.
