The problem of thermal stresses in shells of revolution is addressed by assuming that the outside temperature is a Gaussian stationary stochastic process, so that the stresses are stochastic processes too. The analytical expressions of the stresses are derived as well as their extreme value distribution. The problem of the outcrossing of the stress process across an ellyptical domain (Von Mises' yielding criterion) is examined.

Abstract

The problem of thermal stresses in shells of revolution is addressed by assuming that the outside temperature is a Gaussian stationary stochastic process, so that the stresses are stochastic processes too. The analytical expressions of the stresses are derived as well as their extreme value distribution. The problem of the outcrossing of the stress process across an ellyptical domain (Von Mises' yielding criterion) is examined.
