The conceptual design and a prototype implementation of an intelligent interactive generator of simulation models is presented. The system manages a model base, a knowledge base, and a data base. Integration of the model and the knowledge base is emphasized. Connection of numeric and knowledge representation components is one of the main advantages of the approach. The prototype was implemented on a XEROX 1186 workstation and takes advantage of the presence of two processors: a LISP processor managing the logical description, selection, and maintenance of models as well as the overall control of the system and the user interface, and an 8088 processor to run the simulation programs that are written in classical programming languages. The system is designed to free scientists from details about computer science and to let them concentrate on simulation problems. (ESA)
