Abstract

The homolytic decompn. of NH2OSO3H in alcs. RCH2OH (R = H, Me, Pr) was investigated in the presence or absence of heteroarom. bases I (R1 = H) or II (R2 = H, R3 = Me; R2 = Me, R3 = H) and Fe(II). The addn. of •CHROH to I and II to give I (R1 = CH2OH) and II (R2 = Me, R3 = CHROH; R2 = CH2OH, R3 = Me), and their oxidn. by Fe(III) to RCN, were competitive processes. A redox chain process involving the amino radical cation H3N+• is suggested. Factors affecting the yields of the homolytic substitution are discussed
