A computer procedure based on finite element method (FEA) and experimental analysis for the evaluation of quenching treatment of large low-alloy steel shafts was described. The set up of the model was based on an experimental shaft instrumented with different thermocouples to tune the values defining the heat exchange coefficient. The FEA included the determination of cooling law at every point of the material and calculation of the stress state and residual stress state during heat treatment. The developed procedure allowed optimization of the cooling law to minimize distortions and tensile residual stresses. A modified quenching treatment was also proposed and tested.
