Abstract—Mobility and impedance schemes are widely used in mechanical systems analysis to predict the effects of vibration sources on the system dynamics. This paper describes a systematic approach based on the mobility and impedance method for the characterization of vibration sources. The cases of elastic and rigid bodies are considered and analyzed. Guidelines for the design of the force and torque measurement systems are provided, together with different approaches for their metrological characterization. The characterization of a cryocooler for space-borne instrumentation is eventually shown as a case-study.
