Abstract— The onset of thrombogenic phenomena in blood recirculating devices for ECC, despite adequate anticoagulation, has become an increasing concern amongst perfusionists worldwide. The aim of this work was to analyze the hemodynamic performance and the thrombogenic potential of a prototypal hollow-fiber blood oxygenator with an integrated heat exchanger during ECC via CFD simulations, in order to coherently guide its design.
